Emulating a Macintosh Plus

The best way to play a classic game such as Wizardry is to play it on a classic computer.  But in these latter days, it is hard to find those old computers, and even when you find them, it is hard to get the games from the new computer to the older one.  The Wizardry games for the Mac that are posted here play much better on an older Mac, but if all real options fail, emulation is the best way to accomplish this.

In my opinion, the best emulator for this job is Mini vMac which emulates a Mac Plus from the '80s.  Others, such as Basilisk II etc. are great, and I used Basilisk for some time, but that was for the longer job of emulating a computer to actually work on, and unless you really need it, those others take too much configuring to be practical for playing games.

First, you need to download the emulator from here.  The next step might see you sailing into legally forbidden waters.  In order to emulate an older mac, you must have an image of its Rom recorded to a file.  It is illegal to use a Rom file without actually owning a computer of that type.  I cannot stop you from downloading a Rom image from a site such as http://mess.slor.net/.  But I would ask you to try and buy one of those old computers before giving up and downloading an image.  It just completes the experience.

Next, you will have to download System 6 from Apple's older software download site. Download at least the System 6.0.8 Disk 1 which will boot up the computer from which you can use the Wizardry disk images from this site, but if you feel adventurous (judging from your interest in Wizardry) you may want to create a Hard Disk image on your computer and install System 6.  If so, you also need Disk 2.

From there, you're pretty much set!
