A Lizardman has a resistance handicap that needs to be addressed when
creating a party including them. Their low resistance to mental magic alone,
not including the poor divine resistance, is enough to make you hesitate
to include one of this race. There's no sadder sight than the burly Lizardman
cringing in fear. Likewise there is no one who can strike greater fear
into his comrades than an insane or turncoated Lizardman with a pointy
object. You will most likely want your party to be able to protect against
mental magic and be able to cure the Lizardman who has succumbed to it.
In all fairness to the Lizardman though you need to examine their other resistances, which are quite good. Good resistances to the water and earth based spells mean your Lizardman may not spend much, if any, time influenced by paralyzing spells, though there may be moments when you wished they were. The Lizardman is also only one of two races resistant to fire based spells. The Lizardman is certainly a strong vital race making them obvious choices for melee heavy professions. Their slower magic power recovery and extremely low Intelligence and Piety would pretty much rule them out for magic users where these statistics are very important. Low Senses would eliminate any profession relying heavily upon this attribute. Here we have that "strong as an ox, dumb as a brick senseless gnat" type of person mentioned on the Fighter page. That's that then. Or is it? Though most likely not the first choice, employing a Lizardman as a Psionic will eliminate their weakness. Employing a Lizardman in more vulnerable professions like this could prove useful to the profession as well. A Lizardman can gain Ironskin fairly early, helping the Psionic over come their lower Armor Class problems from limited armor choices. This would be a great way alleviate formation problems in smaller parties since the vulnerable character wouldn't be quite so vulnerable after all. As for slower magic recovery hiring a Bard to accompany the Lizardman spell caster would at least help them to regenerate their magic power normally. In all actuality magic power regeneration is really only a problem early in the game. Once the party reaches the more civilized areas of Dominus they will have access to potions and stones that can replenish magic power. Speaking of Bards, a Lizardman actually makes an outstanding one. |
