Its clobbering time! Let's see what does a Fighter need. Great Strength
to crack a skull. Great Vitality to take a beating. Fairly good Dexterity
so they don't bonk themselves and lop off a vital part of their anatomy.
This should be easy! Oh really?
We all have preconceived notions of a Fighter. Flashing immediately
to mind is a person with bulging muscles as they raise some nasty looking
bit of hardware and send it crashing into an opponent. Conan and his mighty
steel sword, Thor and his hammer, and a Knight in Shining Armor and his
wobbling lance, ok so that sort of takes the romance out of it, but you
get the picture. We have seen all these stereotypical Fighter types often
enough to have been conditioned into a certain way of thinking. But is
that what we must base our development on? Should we?
Viewing the majority of the weapon skills we see a sound basis for this
thinking. With good Strength and Dexterity most of the weapon skills will
advance quite quickly. But are weapon skills enough for a Fighter? Ever
stop to think about why the Close Combat skill gets a skill bonus? Looking
closely at the Close Combat skill we see that it affects attack success.
A Fighter can be as strong as an ox and know how to swing a weapon about,
but if there is no knowledge of how to make the best use of that weapon
in combat what good are the weapon skills? Perhaps enough attention should be given to Intelligence and Senses in order to raise them near 50 or 55 might be prudent as well.
Perhaps having a healthy behemoth who is as dumb as a brick and without
the sense of a gnat isn't always the best strategy. Who ever you select
for this role increase the attributes most suited to the profession as
well as the race chosen for the job. |
