When characters are hit, they say either: "it's just a scratch" or "it's just a flesh wound". That is exactly what the black knight in Monty Pythons "Quest for the Holy Grail" says after one of his arms and one of his legs are cut off. - daHawk
The dragon familiar says, "Growf!" Growf is a nap dragon from "What's New with Phil and Dixie" by Phil Foglio. - Versenwald
"Lenord Skinner" (Harmondale, master disarm teacher) is a reference to the musical group "Lynyrd Skynyrd". - Versenwald
In Stone City, when you leave the temple, they say "Be careful out there."  Could this be a reference to the closing phrase used on Hill Street Blues.  (Old Chicago-based cop show series?) - IThink2
Bracada and Celeste: The guildmasters of the Light guilds are called Lews and Therin; this is a reference to the Kinslayer in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. - Paul
Grognard the goblin (Harmondale): The goblin chief with the signal fires and the semi-useful cutlass is named after a French word meaning "grumbler". The "Grognards" were the veterans of Napoleon's army. They had been in enough battles to give them the right to grumble now and then, even with higher officers present. Nowadays, "grognard" is also a name that wargaming veterans use to describe themselves! - Øystein
The Land of the Giants - form THORGAL [Rosinski - Van Hamme] series: after war beetwen gods and giants the world was divided to three parts Asgard - land of gods, Midgard - land of the middle where humans live, and the Land of the Giants where all giants where moved after the final battle Ragna Rokkr [Twilight of Gods]. Since then gods couldn't go to the Land of the Gigants. Only residents of Midgard can make the trip. Thorgal had to go there to retrieve the artifact, the holy bracelet of Odin 'Draupnir' , to prove that he was the right man to bear their name and become free. - SZUWAKS
Bracada desert : (In French at least) aBRACADAbra is a common word that wizards, whitches, and more often, children, are supposed to say when casting a spell. -  Aykavil
In the Tularean Forest, Schmendrick the Alchemist (Also briefly mentioned in the Golem quest) is based on a character of the same name in Peter S. Beagle's novel, The Last Unicorn (later made into an animated feature by Ralph Bakshi) - Fiona Firehair
The name "Barrow Downs" and in fact, that area (the interconnected barrows filled with undead and treasure laying arround) comes strait out of The Fellowship of the Ring (first book in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy). - Spyder
Agatha Putnam (Expert learning) - there is a math competition in USA between college students called Putnam examination, a variation of Math Olimpiade in other countries. - Vadim
As you enter stables in Bracada Desert, you hear "Where do you want to go today?". It is taken from well-known Microsoft advertisement. - Rze¼nik
It seems that NWC gives another nod to Star Trek in MM7 with Robert the Wise, who directed Star Trek: The Motion Picture - DumB
A nod to Micro$oft (specifically, Windoze® :þ) with the Bracada stablemaster who says "where do you want to go today? - DumB
Crag the Hack was the name of the first default character in the original Might and Magic. - Baumer
Tularean Forest - Garret Dotes may be a nod to Glen Cook's fantasy private investigator Garrett, in the series that starts with SWEET SILVER BLUES. - Mark Reichert (additional info: In the series, a friend of Garrett's is Morley Dotes.  That's probably where the last name comes from. - BJS)
Xavier Bremen - Bremen was the name of one of the druids in Terry Brooks "Shanarra" books - Peter2
Capt. Halsey of the Sea Sprite(?). I believe that to be a reference to Admiral Halsey. Best movie reference for that is The Hunt for Red October in the meeting between the 2 sub crews aboard the Red October. - Keirian
In various temples as you leave, they say to you, "Walk in the light," which is a referance to the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.  In the book the phrase is used much like "May the Force be with you," is used in Star Wars, a departing message. - Nine

The Chimney Sweep NPC (+20 Luck) is a reference to the Mary Poppins character played by Dick Van Dyke. In one of his songs, the line goes, "Chim chiminy chim chim chiree, a sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be. - Sean Casey
Speaker For the Dead is straight out of Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card - Old Dude
Master of learning in Nighon Dorothy Senjak is a nod to another Glen Cook character.  Dorotea Senjak is the "real" name of the Lady, a character in the "Black Company" series. - Death Monger
The voice of the Item Shop clerk is none other than Eric Idle from Monty Python fame -  Soulcutter
Bracada Desert: The bad golem head, "Abbey Normal", which is the name given to the head stolen from the morgue by Marty Feldman as Igor in Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein". - Steve Sutton
Avlee: The Grandmaster of Meditation may be an homage to ole Grasshopper himself, Kwai Chang Caine, the main character of the 70's TV series Kung Fu. - Mark Reichert
In Body Building, Kelli Hollyfield, the expert trainer in the Bracada desert, and Evander, the Grandmaster of Body Building in Nighon, are both obviously nods to Evandar Holyfield, that most "body built" of boxers. - Mark Reichert
The grandmaster of Mind magic (I think he's in Tatalia) is called Xavier Bremen, Xavier is the leader of the X-Men that can read other people minds, entering their soul. - Sha'iich Desert Twister
The Elf king, Elrond. Elrond is a character from JRR Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". - Geir Øveraas
Correction - The Lincoln: The Lincoln is actually named after the Lincoln a ship currently in the U.S. Naval fleet.  - Paul from NWC

Deyja, Harli's Place: Harli Quinn = Harlequin.  Harlequin is a European fairy tale character with colourful clothes. -  Morten Øen
Deyja, Mogren Residence: Claes Mogren.  An actual Swedish name.  No well know person is named by that name (AFAIK), though there are people (at least one) in Sweden named Claes Mogren. - Morten Øen

Erathia: The Grandmaster of Unarmed Combat's name is simply Norris, obviously a reference to Chuck Norris.  The pic even looks like him! - Hansone2
Erathia: There is a Wain Manor (Wayne Manor, Batman), where you find Kenneth Wain, the Dodging Grandmaster.  Could this guy have been one of  Bruce Wayne's ancestors? - Hansone2
One of the disarm trainers (GM) is named (in part) Silk, who happens to be a spy/thief character from the Belgariad, a series of novels by author David Eddings. - Michael M. Aein

Celeste: Sir Caneghem is a reference to New World's game creator Jon Caneghem who lead the development of MM7. -  Morten Øen

Colony Zod: Xenofex is derived from the prefix xeno- meaning of foreign or alien origin. -  Morten Øen
School of Sorcery: Thomas Grey seems to refer to JRR Tolkien's Gandalf the Grey. - Morten Øen
Red Dwarf Mines: The name of the mines can have two different sources. The first is the Narnia-books of C.S. Lewis where red dwarfs is a separate strain of dwarfs. The other, and may be more likely, is a reference to the space soap parody "Red Dwarf". - Morten Øen

Bracada, Applebee Manor: Issaac Applebee seems to refer to Sir Isaac Newton and the falling apple. -  Morten Øen
Stone City, Gizmo's: Gizmo is the friendly gremlin in "Gremlins". - Morten Øen
Stone City, Thorinson Residence: Trip Thorinson is an annotation to JRR Tolkien, The Hobbit. Thorin Oakenshield persuaded Bilbo to go with him on his quest (his trip) "there and back again". - Morten Øen
Harmondale, Arbiter: The first arbiter, judge Grey, seems to indicate neutrality since grey is between black and white. - Morten Øen
Harmondale, Chadric's House: Turgon Woodsplitter has got his name from Silmarilion of JRR Tolkien, where Turgon is the king of the hidden city of Gondolin. - Morten Øen
Erathia, Quixote Residence: Sir Quixote is of course a rewriting of Servantes' character Don Quixote from the novel by the same name. (Don is the Spanish for Sir.) The novel Don Quixote is usually recognised as the first novel ever in the modern meaning of the word. - Morten Øen
Erathia, Sewers: William Lasker; 'lascar' is French for something close to rogue. A burly one. - Gilles M. D'Aoust
Deyja, Falk Residence: Daedalus Falk is named after the mythical old Greek inventor of sculptures Daedalus. (He built the Minoean Labyrinth, but was trapped in it not to reveal it's secret. He fled with his son Icarus using wings he made. Icarus flied to near the sun and scorched he fell in the sea and drowned.) Daedalus is an old Greek word meaning carved image. - Morten Øen
Deyja, William Setag's Tower: William Setag, Villain. Setag is Gates backwards: William (Bill) Setag. -  Morten Øen
Tularean Forest, Miyon's Home: Miyon the Quick seems to be a wordplay on the fast elementary particles myons (or muons). - Morten Øen
